Dusty road sundaes are the greatest creation ever!! They must be Pennsylvanian because no one I've talked to has has heard of them. They consist of ice cream topped with chocolate syrup and malted milk powder :D It is a fantastic combination that I highly recommend. I prefer mine with soft serve vanilla, or grasshopper pie ice cream (by Hood: mint ice cream with oreos and fudge!!! Wow! Too bad they don't make it anymore :(
It's hard to find malted milk powder in the store and in a desperate moment I ordered some on Amazon. Unfortunately, they are only sold in 4 packs. Seriously. I love dusty roads, but I still only go through about one container a year. So now I have a 3 extra containers of malted milk powder. I will need to increase my ice cream consumption just to eat it all before the expiration date! Dusty roads anyone? :D

YES, when? :)
Again, something to hit up when I'm in dc next...
I think my dusty road slowed me down in cycling today
yes they are from Pa. we used to have contests with them. but you have to use hard scooped vanilla ice cream. the contest was simple- whoever spilled "dust" on the table bought the sundaes. glad someone else has found these wonderful treats.
They are definitely in Wisconsin. Most of our custard stands serve them. It is my favorite sundae. But ice cream is no good. Must be custard. And large pecans are a must on it.
No they are not necessarily from Pennsylvania. My parents bought a Star Dairy Ice Cream store in 1950 and one of the Sundays we made was the Dusty Road Sunday, made as described. My Dad first made them working as a Soda Jerk when he was in High School around 1925 in Port Chester New York.Larry
I'm from western NJ and I grew up on dusty roads. My fiancée who is a military brat and has been all over this great country has never heard of them till she met me, She now loves them as much as I do.. and if you are selling some Dusty Roads.. Where, when and how much? lol
I'm 67 and remembering having these at a drug store soda fountain when I was about 8 or 10 years old in northern New Jersey. I haven't had or seen one since.
I grew up in Connecticut and a Dusty Malt Sundae was exactly as you describe here. My absolute favorite at Wall's Dairy in East Hampton! Mmmmm.
I had them at a beach club on Long Island, NY in the 60's. It was called a "Dusty Miller" - vanilla ice cream, malted milk powder and chocolate sauce. Same idea - different name......and a wonderful treat!
I grew up in central NY (Rome) and Dusty Roads were my favorite sundae. When I moved away from home, I was surprised when I tried to order a Dusty Road and nobody knew what I was talking about.
Ewing Nj parfait house on Olden Ave! My fav sundae was the Dusty Road and it was Exactly as you described
My Dad used to order them when I was younger. We would go to Hudock's Custard Stand in Quinton, Salem County, South Jersey. I always thought that they tasted like it had crushed Whoppers (aka Malted Milk Balls) in it.
In Maine the Dusty road sundae was made with coffee ice cream , hot fudge and of course the all important malt! We got these from Dering restaurants which are no longer open unfortunately!
I live in Easton, Pa but spent a lot of my youth in NJ. There are two places in NJ that serve it and one in PA.... I am 48 years old and had my first one when I was 4...
Bermuda! That's the real home of the dusty road! But you have to add salted peanuts after you put on the malted milk because those are the rocks in the road on top of the Dust. They have to be salted. Best sundae ever!
Yup, the Dusty Road is from Pennsylvania. I grew up in a small town on Lake Erie called North East. The Dusty Road sundae was the only one I ever ordered as a kid. I'm all grown up now, moved to Ohio and still teach ice cream parlor wait staff how to make it. I always say it tastes like the malted milk ball candy, Whoppers. Ummmmm

My parents insist that the Dusty Miller was invented in Marceline, Missouri in the 1930's.
I grew up in South Jersey and my first Dusty Road Sundae was from Richmonds Ice Cream. Best thing I ever ate! We moved to FL many, many moons ago and I haven't had one since.
I’m from Pa and have fond memories of dusty roads Sunday’s. I think we’ll have them tonight. Always hard vanilla bean ice cream.
I absolutely loved my Dusty Roads. I bought them as a kid at our local soda shop. This was in West Point, Ga, so I guess they were everywhere. I would love to know what chocolate syrup they used.
I worked at Deerings Ice Cream Shop in Concord,NH, in the 1970's & that was a favorite of many. There's no Deerings in NH that I know of, but they're easy enough to make with coffee ice cream, hot fudge & malt!
It was my favorite treat from 1967-1971 at University of Wisconsin. In those days we had to go to Babcock Hall tomget Babcock ice cream. Dusty Road Sundae was the best.
Coffee yes!
Growing up in Pa. there was only one place that I remember getting these delicious sundaes. Suburbs of Philly, north on 309 to a place on the corner near Montgomeryville, Pa.. Fortunately my Mom was an Avon representative and they had meetings there. I would beg her to bring me to the meetings and I only had to sit though an hour or so before we went upstairs to get a sundae. I just rec’d my Amazon order for maltedmilk so I just need ice cream and chocolate sauce now. I am so excited!!!!!!
I’m from Miami, Florida and my dad used to make Dusty Road Sundays at home. And guess what? He was born in Pennsylvania!

Not custard or pecans in PA!!!
Yummy to make with vanilla ice cream (hard) and chocolate syrup and malt and whipped cream!
We used to get them at Woolworths in Easton PA. 🎉
I'm from Maine. It was my favorite when going to Deering Ice Cream as a kid. They also had "The kitchen sink", basically it was everything they had in the shop into one big ice cream. Free if you finished it alone, I always had to share. Oh to be a kid again
I am in like Flint!!! I think society would be happier if everyone had one of these daily!
Agreed. Ice cream is ok, but custard is so much better in every way. And definitely should have pecans on a dusty road. Standard custard sundae in Wisconsin.
I remember having these in the 60's in Colonia, NJ.
